Class Descriptions

AS 50 Challenge

Will cover the premise of the Challenge, the types of Challenges available, the rules of the Challenge, how the Challenge benefits, and some suggestions on how to document your own Challenges, with a question and answer segment if we have time.

Basic Blackwork for Beginners
Instructor: Lady Grainne an Achill, CW

A class in blackwork embroidery for the beginner who has always wanted to try blackwork but has never had the nerve to really give it a try!  The teacher is laid back and willing to answer any questions you might have.  The booklet you will receive from this class will show you how to move forward to more detailed blackwork designs. The teacher will also provide fabric, embroidery thread and needle.
Class size limit: 10; Fee: $5.00 for booklet, fabric, embroidery thread and needle.

Basic Middle Eastern Garb
Instructor: Baroness Madelaine Bouvier

Would you like to try a different kind of garb? Perhaps a different persona for a day or an event? Would you like to help enhance the atmosphere at a Middle Eastern themed event but don't know where to start? Then come to Madelaine's Basic Middle Eastern for beginners class. We will cover simple tribal wear, as well as elements for the city dweller. We might even touch on some food ideas to complete your outfit's culinary side if time, and the students, permit.

Constructing a Birka Viking Cap

A How-to class on constructing a simple Mens’ Viking cap based on the finds in Birka.  We will be using needles appropriate for the time period.
Supplies for 8, beginners and auditors welcome

How to Speak More Forsoothly
Instructor: THL Brendan O Corraidhe

At SCA events, we routinely and deliberately deceive ourselves into thinking we are living in another time and place.  But few things can shatter that mood faster than someone yammering about their new cell phone or tablet computer!  In this class, participants will learn - and practice - a handful of simple ways to modify their speech patterns in order to help create and preserve our shared illusion that we are medieval people living in medieval times.

Introduction to Allemandes
Instructor: Lady Gianna Vettori

This introductory course will cover allemandes including Lorayne, Black, and the regional favorite Clifton Court.

Introduction to Leather Working
Instructor: THL Brendan O Corraidhe

"'Introduction to Leather Working' is a hands-on workshop that gives participants the opportunity to handle different kinds of leather and to try out a variety of tools used to mark, cut, connect, and decorate leather articles.  An excellent introduction for those planning to take the mug strap/circlet class.
Warning: Razor-sharp tools, no one under 12.
$5 fee for materials and handout."

Performance 101
Instructor: Mesterno Tyzes "Zsof" Sofia

Ever wanted to perform but been too afraid to try? In this class we will go over the steps from picking a piece to your first performance (and after). We'll talk about overcoming stage fright and performance techniques. This class is open to all, particularly novice to beginner.

Piccolo Passi: Baby Steps to Italian Dance
Instructor: Lady Ginevra Boscoli

Covers basics of 15th century Italian dance – it doesn’t have to be scary!  Will include terminology, steps, and 3 dances (Petit Riense, Rastiboli Gioioso, and Saltarella La Regina), time permitting.

The Shakespearean Sonnet
Instructor: THL Edward FitzRanulf

The class is an introduction to the most common used poetical form in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England, and some tips on how to write a Sonnet.

Soap 101
Instructor: Lady Aelfwyn Elswith of the Confraternity of St.Eve

Soap 101 or Lady Aelfwyn's soap making basics: If you've never put lye to oils this is the class for you. We'll talk about some common misconceptions about soap making, what you'll need to get started, how you can develop your own recipes and I'll even hand out some resources lists along with some simple recipes and a sample of the soap we'll make in class.
Class size limit: 16; Supplies fee: $1.

Speed SCAdian (see Activities page for description)
Organizer: Lord Tarmach ben Yehuda al-Khazar

Tooled Leather Mug Straps or Circlets (1.5 hrs)

Class size limit: 8. Materials fee: $5 ($2 for leather and optional $3 for hardware)

Topping It Off....finishing your look with a hat
Instructor: Duchess Ilish O’Donovan

Introduction to headdress and coverings for both men and women.  Discussion on how hats will take your look from a "costume" to a finished historical look.  Many examples will be on hand to try.

Viking Bead Styles
Instructor: Lady Cecily de Montgomery

Beads are a significant form of adornment for Scandinavian women in the early medieval period. With reference to primary sources, this class examines the materials, colours, shapes and styles of Viking beads. Includes what to look for in modern and reproduction beads, and how to use them to create a good period look.

Write a Brand New 16th Century Play
Instructors: i Verdi Confusi

i Verdi Confusi invites all  all who are interested to learn and then help craft a scenario idea for a brand new farcical comedy - by Sixteenth Century Standards! Learn the typical plot structure and cast of characters for a Commedia dell'Arte and how to write a new play.

Youth and A&S
Facilitator: Lady Elizabethe Alles, Middle Kingdom Minister of Youth

A roundtable discussion focusing on youth and families and the arts and sciences in our current Middle Ages.  The arts and sciences provide many opportunities to achieve the goals of our youth programs – to provide age-appropriate ways to learn about and recreate the Middle Ages and Renaissance.  Please bring your ideas on how we can integrate the youth programs and A&S activities to make our Society a wonderful experience for youth and families.
